Start Your Successful Reinvention Here

5. Give back

It’s very easy to become consumed with what kind of progress you’re making in your reinvention.  But like your grandma used to say, you’re not going to make a tea kettle boil any faster by hanging over it. You’ll feel better if, on a regular basis, you put your focus onto something outside of yourself and your life. Volunteering reminds you that you have something of value to offer, which is one of the most important beliefs you must have in order to reinvent your career.

Pamela Mitchell is Founder & CEO of The Reinvention Institute, and creator of the most popular career reinvention course in the country, Career Reinvention BootCamp.  She is a noted expert and in-demand speaker who has appeared on the Today Show and been profiled and quoted in top media publications including The Wall Street Journal, BusinessWeek, More, Men’s Health, and Black Enterprise.  Her book, The 10 Laws of Career Reinvention, will be published by Dutton in December 2009.

Talk about timing!! I am working on, and making little reinventions already. The first being what I thought about myself. I've always known in my head, that I have just as much worth and value as anyone else. But not in my heart. Now, with the help of cognitive therapy and medication, I finally broke through a huge wall in my psyche - a major accomplishment. Once that happened my heart filled with the truth that I am priceless - even if others don't think so. But not only that, with it came loads confidence! Now at 45, for the first time in my life I feel like I can do anything - and I believe it too! Woo! Hoo! So now I'm working on reinventing my career - I want to be a writer, and airbrush artist. I've also discovered a desire, and the courage, to get my motorcycle license. After that, the plan is to buy a Harley and join my local H.O.G. (Harley Owners Group.) From there I'll follow where this ride leads me - savoring every aspect of it along the way. I can't wait.

UGH! I'm overwhelmed and underwhelmed all at the same time!! Had a nice career going but put it on hold to raise 3 kids. Moving far from Manhattan didn't help, as the job prospects in my field don't really pay well in the burbs. Kids are getting bigger (so am I actually, since I think I'm despressed!!) and I want to "REINVENT" me! I want to do what I love, but without feeling the guilt that I"m not doing enough for my family. How can it be all about me, when society says a good mom makes it all about her kids and family??
Rose Marie: we'll have huge amount of tips in our february issue which is the reinvention issue. Also, if you really want to get serious, come to the reinvention convention in NYC in Oct (see Don't Miss column for how to sign up.) It's very inspiring. Before I was the editor of More I was at the convention myself trying to decide what to do next!
After raising a family, I started my working career. Retired early to care for failing parent. Now I am looking to reinvent myself again and am keeping an open mind to see where to go from here. This seems like an undertaking many women face throughout their lifetime. However, I'm growing impatient so any tips and articles on the subject grab my attention. I know this is something you cannot force but going in the right direction helps.
