A Beauty Pageant Changed My Life

I have entered countless beauty pageants since that time, winning some, but losing most. My mission is no longer to have a panel of judges extrinsically define me as beautiful, but rather, to change and re-define societies perception of beauty for all women.

Competitions like “She’s Got the Look” (a reality modeling challenge for women over age 35) and MORE’S cover model contest appeal to so many of us because we hold on to the dream that one of us just might succeed in re-defining “beauty” to include the average gal. We hope that our years of experience and the confidence and self-acceptance that come with age and wisdom just might give us a shot at it too.

So I am on a new quest to be “above average”, not just in my own mind, but in societies too, so that my daughter will grow up knowing and believing that she is beautiful- regardless if she is short or tall, thick or thin, fit or fat.

What a great perspective Terri, that so many women can relate to. Rather than trying to assimilate your body to fit the industry molds, you accepted it, embraced it, and flaunted it unabashedly! Seems like you gained more than you imagined by participating in the pageant. Thanks for sharing your inspiring experience!
I had no idea that participating in a beauty pageant could be so transformative. This is quite an eye-opener. Thanks for posting.
