Proceeds from the hand-beaded bags, sold exclusively at Bergdorf’s, help feed underprivileged children.
Lauren Bush, a model and activist who happens to be George W. Bush’s niece, and Ellen Gustafson, a former United Nations World Food Program communications officer, have created the FEED 2 Kenya bag ($195) selling at Bergdorf Goodman from now until the end of summer. The double-sided, reversible tote uses local Masai fabric and is hand-beaded by a co-op of Kenyan women from a school for the deaf. One hundred dollars from each bag will go to feed two Kenyan schoolchildren for a year. If you’re going to shop for a cause, this is a great way to do it: Besides helping to fight world hunger and promoting nutrition, it is an ideal weekend carryall. The FEED initiative (feedprojects.org), which started in 2006, has led to more than $4 million in donations for WFP school feeding.
Sneak Peek: Starting in October, a new, organic-cotton FEED bag tote will be available for only $24.95 at Barnes & Noble stores and bn.com, in a partnership with Room to Read (roomtoread.org). The proceeds for each bag will provide three school lunches and three Room to Read books for children in Nepal.
