The Trick That Will Keep You Exercising

A leading expert on women ’s exercise offers a smart yet simple mental strategy for sticking with your workouts.

For many of us, the concepts of eating well and exercise go hand in hand. Yet we treat eating with much more flexibility than we treat exercising. If we are in a rush, the well-planned meal can fall to the wayside and we can grab a bite on the go. We don’t hesitate making this compromise. Yet, we don’t give ourselves the same flexibility with exercising.

We know that depending upon any given day and time, our eating plans have to change. In general, even with specific plans for our and our family’s meals, we know that our meal plans can go out of the window at any point, and we’ll just have to improvise and often eat to a lower standard.

Good grief, so obvious and simple and yet we don't think of it. Somehow we think it has to be all or nothing. I notice that if I'm trying to shed a few pounds by cutting back for a week or two, there is the temptation, if I slip up to just think, 'aw the hell with it' and throw all discipline out the door instead of just getting right back on track. We humans are certainly a befuddling bag of psychology sometimes. Thanks for the great reminder!

What a great article! In our society, it is so easy to think in black and white when it comes to exercise: the people who "do it" are one kind, the people who don't aren't. It's great to read the grey about this subject, and to feel that not only is exercise our right to ourselves, it is a gift. I love the addition of this new voice in MORE!
I'm so glad this idea made sense. It's quite simple yet can have a profound impact, both on how stressed out you get about having to do a certain amount on any given day and what you will wind up actually doing. In this case, LESS IS MORE.

this mindset really works! it helped this morning. I overslept, and in the past that would have made me skip my morning run. But instead, i did a short run. No guilt!
