Customize Your Home Gym--for Under $200

Here’s all the exercise equipment an over-40 woman needs to shape up at home.

This set of at-home equipment, recommended for over-40 women by Anne Tierney, trainer to Olympic swimmer Dara Torres, builds flexibility and strength while slowing age-related bone and muscle loss.

Stability ball ($20 to $40; balldynamics.com) It’s the key to working your core and fighting belly fat, and comes with directions.

Resistance bands ($46; resistancebands.com) Cheaper and more versatile than dumbbells, these lightweight strips will strengthen and tone all your muscles.

Push-up handles ($30; perfectpushup.com) This pair of rotating handles comes with a poster illustrating how to engage muscles and reduce wrist and elbow strain during push-ups.

Pull-up bar ($30; perfectpullup.com) It’s adjustable, fits in a doorframe and is good for pull-ups, chin-ups and other upper-body exercises.

A guide to effective stretching ($20; innovativebodysolutions.com) The DVD Resistance Stretching with Dara Torres includes 120 minutes of instruction, including demos of each exercise.

yes: ball, bands & weights for toning & core strength then run miles outside for cardio = in best shape of my life now at 43yrs young (& yes, i did get caught up in that health club scene in my 20's & 30's & wasted too much $ for not enough results = but wiser choices now ;)
