Should TVLand Pull the Plug on "Cougar"?

Demi Moore made the younger man a phenomenon when she married Ashton Kutcher. Then there was Madonnna, and the not-quite-yet 40 Drew Barrymore. So it was inevitable: Hollywood has brought us The Cougar, TV Land’s new reality show, where 40 year-old Stacey Anderson weeds through her den of cubs  in search of the perfect mate. Rebbeca Traister of of salon.com proclaims, "I hate the word cougar."

Which side of this cougar frenzy are you on? Do you date younger men?
And what should we call men who date younger women? Uhhh. Men?

Are you kidding???? Just the word "Cougar" resonates power, wisdom, strength and stealth. Who under 40 has THOSE abilities? No one I know! What do you call a man who dates (or marries, in my case) an older woman? SMART. LOL!!!!!!!!
I'm not easily offended, so this particular label doesn't bother me in the least...Purrrrrrrrr....(giggling)...I think personally, cougars are beautiful creatures". Afterall, I'd much rather prefer being labled a "cougar" to "dirty old woman" any day...

The first man I dated after my divorce was 9 years younger they have progressively gotten younger. When living in DC and turning 50 while there, I dated a guy 27. He was very intelligent, charismatic, witty and my authentic young spirit, energy and heart were the same as his. This is a bitter sweet situation that keeps repeating itself. I would welcome dating a man my age, however, I have yet to meet one that has the same young spirit as I do. If I'm labeled a cougar, so be it. I just am always authentic in every way. If that attracts the same energy, so be it. I'm not "seeking out younger men".

I cannot believe there is even a show about this subject. Men have been dating women who are younger than themselves for as long as time itself. So why is it that when we women decided to date younger men, it is made into such a big deal? And no, I do not like the term cougar because it makes it seem as if we women are on the prowl. In most cases, it is the younger men who are pursuing us.

AAAHHH!! I can't seem to escape this. Just this morning I posted a comment on more.com about the use of this word and how I can't help thinking that this is the most sexist and derogatory term I have heard in a long time. Yes I date younger men (I am turning 46 next week). I have also dated men my age and a few years older. I do not think there is anything noteworthy about it. I choose to date men based on interests, intellect and lifestyle. For people who still aren't convinced that the term is being used to portray women in a negative way just look up the "Cougar Barbie" video on youtube.

I thought men who dated younger women were referred to as 'dirty old goat'. I'd rather be a cougar :)

Why do we always demonize women who're powerful? Cougar should be a positive word but the way it's being used makes one associate it with being ruthless, desperate, grasping, and manipulative, none of which are positive. We gotta take back the word!
No more cougar slurs ok! We're done with that
