Co-workers: Keep out!

A new gadget promises peace of mind at the office.

At this point in your career, chances are you're sitting pretty—in a corner office complete with windows (and a door!). But if you're like 50 million other Americans, you're stuck in an airy cubicle with views of the parking lot. Wherever you work, there's no avoiding the same daily distractions: the loud telephone-talker, the top-40 cellphone ringtone, the chatty passersby.

Lucky for you we've stumbled onto a solution: CubeGuard Cubicle Message Barrier. It's a retractable, easy-to-install banner that lets co-workers know when to keep out (think police tape and velvet ropes). You can choose from an assortment of background designs and create your own message. We're thinking of going with "Can't you see I'm busy?" or "Hot flash in progress." It may take a day or two for your colleagues to adjust to your unavailability, but who cares? You certainly won't when you're leaving on time, for once, because all of your work is done. love this! believe it or not, i've worked in offices where the manager taped people inside their offices until they reached their deadline. PS-this message was sent from a cube! not an office!

This tape would make a nice gift item. But there's no way the tape will work, since the whole idea is predicated on the assumption that people will read and respect your request. That is not the behavior of the pathologically self-absorbed co-worker whom you are hoping to fend off. S/he is more likely to duck under the pesky tape--what the heck is it doing there anyway?--on her way to getting in your face about her nutty issue of the day.

This looks like it would work a lot better than what I used to do when I had a cubicle: masking tape across the entrance with Sharpie writing on it saying "ON DEADLINE--BACK AWAY FROM THE CUBE."
