Small screen, big personalities—the actresses and characters we (and the Emmys) love.

Kyra Sedgwick in "The Closer"

As LAPD deputy chief Brenda Leigh Johnson, Sedgwick talks softly but packs a big wallop. Though Brenda’s a workaholic with a sugar habit, she did manage, after much dilly-dallying, to fit in a wedding to her FBI fiancé, Fritz.

I agree; not much diversity, both in characters and type of shows. Out of all of these I only watch Law & Order with any consistency. The others are pretty homogenous. The female characters I enjoy are on The Office: Angela Martin, Phyllis Lapin, Meredith Palmer, and Kelly Kapoor. They all have their strong moments, and all have times when they crumble. Well, Angela doesn't crumble very often. The writers actually give these actresses something to work with, which is rare.

Not much of a diverse group of women… who came up with this list? Come on, it is 2009.
My favorite strong complex female TV character is Ziva David of NCIS. I find her 'misuse' of american phrases and jargon wittry... being complex also comes with her being an Israeli agent on an American team.
