Great Romantic Comedy? It's All Greek To Me.

OK, I admit it.  I'm a sucker for romance. You know that famous 1945 photo of the sailor on V-J Day, celebrating the end of World War II by kissing the young nurse in the middle of Times Square? That iconic image gets me right in the heart, every time.

The fact that this sailor was allegedly kissing every girl that he encountered….that's really inconsequential, as far as I'm concerned.

Hey, a romantic moment, is a romantic moment.

So, I'm unabashedly romantic…but I'm also a gal who loves to laugh. I honestly feel that smart and silly people who can truly bring the funny are some of the best things in life.

So I'll give you all one very easy guess as to my favorite motion picture genre.

Ding, ding, ding…we have a winner. Romantic Comedies.

To be more specific: the sweet, sappy, warm, funny and charming movies that can be annoyingly predictable, but oh, so satisfying when you're laying on the couch and nursing a broken heart on a rainy Saturday afternoon with a big bowl of mocha chip ice cream and a bag 'o chips chaser.

Yes, I may have done that….once or twice. (Hmmm….that reminds me, I need to get more chips.)

Y'all know what I'm talkin' about here, doncha?  Guy meets girl, guy gets girl, guy loses girl, guy gets girl back, everybody kiss…..fade to black.

When done right, romantic comedies are some of the best films out there.

It Happened One Night, When Harry Met Sally, Annie Hall, Moonstruck and The Philadelphia Story. All great flicks and favorites of mine that just happen to be on the American Film Institute's list of the "Top 10 Romantic Comedies."

OK, so we've established that I'm sappy, but I'm also somewhat picky. As you can see, for me….romantic comedies today have some big shoes to fill.

So all of this Rom Com reflection today is due to my excitement about a new potential favorite that opened this past weekend. The title doesn't seem to promise romance or comedy, but the premise and star have me hopefully optimistic.

Yes, I've seen the promos and the hunk! Greece, hunky guy, funny gal = my cup of tea. Summer time is full of action-jackson, blow-up fever full of testosterone. Not for me, thanks. The promotions department is smart. They are using social media, Twitter, in fact to promote the flick. You can follow @NiaVardalos and see videos, clips, chatter, et al. Smart idea. I'll be there in the dark with my "Hot Tamales", candy that is, not greek guys! Julie
