This garment industry career woman now uses her seamstress skills for a hobby, while raising well-grounded twin girls.
Name: Kristina Davis
Born: 2/3/1964
Children: Anna and Alexa, both 4
Status: Married for 8 years
Occupation: Stay-at-home mom and seamstress (as a hobby)
Hometown: New York, New York
Meet Kristina: "For fun, I make custom-made halters from vintage scarves. I'd wear them out, and people would always ask me where I got them, so I started making them for other people. I'll gather my friends at my house, and they choose the scarves they want to use and I make the halters. The fun part is to see which scarves go together. I can finish a simple one in one evening."
"Others think people are rude in New York City, but I just think people are really busy. I also think I'm an anomaly here. I love talking to people in grocery lines, helping old ladies -- if I make someone smile, it makes me smile, but people do often say, 'You're not from here, are you?'"
Describe your fitness routine: "I chase after two 4-year-olds, and I do lots of walking -- I live in New York City, after all. I also do some yoga, but I'm not that consistent, maybe once every couple of weeks. I like yoga because I'm not a high-impact person, and yoga is very relaxing. It especially helped my back after I had twins. I had gained about 60 pounds and I've lost most of it finally, but I still have about five pounds I want to lose -- isn't it always that way?"
What's the smartest move you've ever made? "Marrying my husband. He's my partner, my friend, my lover, my soul mate, and just a great guy and a wonderful father. He makes me a better person and vice versa. Ironically, we met in San Francisco. I was living in Los Angeles and he was visiting from New York. We met in 1990. I moved to New York, and we dated and then stopped dating and got back together and broke up again and finally, we decided we should just try to make it work. Basically, we grew up, and now I can't believe the things we fought about."
What is the biggest change you've faced as a woman over 40? "The weirdest thing for me is my fertility. I've had two miscarriages, and I guess that's because of my age. If it were up to me, I'd have four or five kids. I was really yearning for a long time, but I kind of mourned it and have moved on from it to the next stage. If it were to happen, that would be great, but you know, I finally got my body back and I'm in those Seven jeans again, and I don't know if it would be that easy to get back into them a second time. My kids are at an age where it would be starting over, really. So, I'm accepting it."
What do you know now that you didn't know at 25? "So much. When you're young and immature, you search for outside influences to give your life meaning. Confidence comes from liking who you are and, for me, that means being a kind and empathetic person. I like the wisdom that has come with 40. I feel much more calm in my own body."
