I didn’t even hear them announce my name—I never expected to win.
After a very successful teaching career, I sent in pictures and started modeling and was an extra on Law and Order, 30 Rock and other popular TV shows. I also stood near Angelina Jolie in Salt, was cast in an infomercial as well as a commercial. But the most fun I ever had was entering and winning the title of Ms. New York Senior America and then 6 months later, the national title of Ms. Senior America at Harrah’s Casino in New Jersey.I had no idea what I was getting into as I filled out the application, went on the interview and performed a lyrical ballet. When I was announced the winner in New York, I didn’t even heard my name because I was speaking to another contestant and didn't expect to win. Six months later, I competed at Harrah's and made the top 10. Then the top 5. This time I heard my name but checked the crown all night to be sure I wasn't dreaming. The pageant was based on inner beauty, evening gown, interview, talent and community service. I love the fact that it celebrates the accomplishments of senior women. I am traveling the country changing stereotypes of senior women and I am also using my crown and sash to help those afflicted with breast cancer as I am a 35 year survivor. I love giving myself the gift of giving back and helping others.
