Do we dumb down during perimenopause?

The other day my cousin was over. We decided to order a pizza. I must have asked him ten times what he wanted on that pizza. The minute he'd tell me, I'd forget.

This is not uncommon lately.

As a matter of fact, it's down right disturbing!

I find that I have to really make an effort to concentrate. I'm a detail oriented person, so when I start to lose track of anything, I get out of sorts.

So, as usual, I was looking at articles online and I came across this one that - yet again - nailed my perimenopausal symptoms. Check this out:

Perimenopause Associated with Cognitive Decline

Women lose their intellectual edge in perimenopause, but regain it in the later phases of menopause, researchers say.

"You're a little off your game," said Gail Greendale, M.D., of the University of California Los Angeles, lead author of the study, in describing the phenomenon. "You're not forgetting your way to the grocery store, but you don't feel as sharp or fast on the uptake."

The researchers noted that about 60% of women report memory problems during the transition into menopause. However, the issue of 'brain fog' during the various phases of menopause had not been well investigated.

It goes on to say that "Most of the testing revealed that cognitive functioning rebounded when women reached menopause."

Hmm... does this mean I'll be operating at about 50% for the next 20 years or so? This does not sit well with me... no.. not at all.

I forgot what I was going to do now...

Until next time

Congrats Lorna Lino, that means this hasn't affected you! Unfortunately it has me! One thing I know for sure, I haven't fallen prey to some male dominated ploy to keep me from recognizing my value! If anything you sell women short by suggesting this is what's going on with us. I don't care what men have been experiencing...that has nothing to do with me! I don't care what it's called. I am a bright, intelligent woman who is aware of MY body and what it is doing. I am physically not quite in menopause but the stages before (please don't make me explain that...) who is experiencing this memory lose. I am not experiencing Alzheimers. This is exactly what I thought was going on with me. Your comment sounds just like people who denied the existence of fibromyalgia. Just because you haven't experienced it doesn't make it not so!!! Get a hold of yourself!

Firstly who in God's name came up with the term "perimenopausal"? Could we think of anything more insulting? These terms are thrown around to convince women there is something wrong with them when in fact they are perfectly fine, not forgetful, they're just not that interested. If I can't remember your pizza toppings, then go tell someone else who cares like the guy who's going to make it. Men have been getting away with brain fog for a million years without a medicated title, just see them remember to take out the garbage. This terms smacks of the derogatory PMS title that was thrown in our faces everytime we stood up for ourselves or refused to play the good girl. Beware of this one girls, if they wanted us to remember everything why did they give us computers.
