When I think of Mother’s Day gifts, I always think of fragrance. I admit, I’m nearly always thinking of fragrance, but it does seem an appropriate gift for my mom, because it was poking through her (and my Granny’s) perfume bottles that I first learned to love fragrance. As a matter of fact, I’m heading off to see my mother around Mother’s Day, and we have a fragrance night planned. I’m taking a bunch of my samples and decants and we’re going to spend the night drinking tea, sniffing perfume, and generally having fun. We’re both looking forward to that night and I think it’s a great idea to take your mom—or any mother you love—perfume sampling one afternoon. You can sniff away to your heart’s content, perhaps buy her a bottle of something she would never buy for herself, and then take her off for tea, or a stronger libation, to top off the afternoon. If you’re stymied for choices, the fragrances below are a good place to start.Gwen Stefani Harajuku Lovers
If your Mom loves Hello Kitty, these cute little fragrance bottles are sure to delight her. $30–$65. Widely available, including at Macy’s.
Flora, by Gucci
Gucci’s newest release, a floral with a hint of patchouli. Shower gel, body lotion, and Eau de Toilette. $38–$90. Widely available, including Macy’s.
Daisy, by Marc Jacobs
I’m just crazy for Daisy and this limited edition bottle with adorable green petals is too good to pass up. $57 at Sephora.
Eau de Fleur Magnolia, by Kenzo
Kenzo just released its Eaux de Fleurs collection with three fragrances and this citrus-y floral is my favorite. $55 at Sephora.
Les Epices de la Passion Eau de Toilette Set, by L’Artisan Parfumeur
For the woman who likes to mix and match her fragrances, these three sprays might be just the thing. $75 at Neiman Marcus.
Infusion D’Iris, by Prada
A lovely, crisp iris scent and a great favorite of mine. There are a wide variety of products in the line, including a pretty candle. $44–$360. Widely available, including at Nordstrom.
Un Matin d’Orage Eau de Toilette Rollerball, by Annick Goutal
I love these little rollerballs; it’s a great way to try this lovely fragrance. $29 at Bloomingdales.
This list is just a jumping off place and don’t forget that lots of stores have promotional gift sets if you can’t get your mom to wear anything other than her lifetime favorite fragrance. It’s also good to remember that Sephora and Nordstrom are happy to decant you a small sample if you want to wear a fragrance for a day or two before you commit and Estée Lauder is always generous with samples if they have them at the counter.
