Hair Evolution: Rihanna the Hair Chameleon

Here at Divine Caroline we’re big fans of changing your look, be it a new haircut or colorful new eyeliner. But Rihanna takes the cake on style changes with her ever-evolving hair colors, cuts, and extensions. Take a walk through Rihanna’s looks from 2006 to now: the good, the bad, and the what was she thinking?

In August 2006, when Rihanna was still a fresh-faced, thicky accented singer from Barbados crooning "SOS," she wore her long locks in a chic curled updo at the Teen Choice Awards in Universal City, CA. “Bad Gal Riri” with 19 tattoos hadn’t yet surfaced.

Rihanna’s hair evolution began in December 2006 when she sported an extra long length and a middle part at the Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas.

Salons everywhere received requests for the “Rihanna Haircut” once she debuted this edgy angled cut in a dark color at the March 2007 Kids’ Choice Awards in Los Angeles.

In June 2007, Rihanna showed off her short haircut at the Hollywood release of her new album Good Girl Gone Bad. I’ve been dying to try the look of her straight-across bangs with some clip-in hair extensions ever since.

A deep part and tight curls gave Rihanna a glamorous hairstyle for the BET Awards in June 2007 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.

I’m absolutely in love the piecey, textured pixie cut Rihanna wore to the 2008 BET Awards. Summer hairstyle inspiration anyone?

Three months after Rihanna’s hair was so right at the BET Awards, it was so, so wrong at the September 2008 MTV Video Music Awards. Cruella de Vil should never be a woman’s style inspiration.

There's no question that 2009 was a rough year for Rihanna: She filed a police report with the LAPD against Chris Brown for an argument resulting in physical violence that landed her all over the news. By November of that year, Rihanna was all tough edges with this half-shaved hairstyle and edgy winged eye makeup.

Rihanna complemented her soft lavender smokey eye and tulle dress with this feathered hairstyle at the Pre-Grammy Gala & Salute to Icons in January 2010. Notice one of her now-signature tattoos making an appearance.

At Nickelodeon’s 23rd Annual Kids’ Choice Awards in March 2010, Rihanna appeared with a bold two-tone hairstyle. My advice? If you’re going with dark and light shades of hair, stick to ombres and highlights, not drastic colors and chunky sections.

Rihanna's next step in her hair evolution: bright red haircolor and voluminous curls as seen at the November 2010 American Music Awards at the Nokia Theatre in downtown Los Angeles.

Rihanna’s bright red locks took on a short, layered style a la Whitney Houston at the Billboard Music Awards in May 2011.

Lots of body and caramel highlights gave Rihanna a sophisticated look at the launch of her Reb’l Fleur perfume in London in August 2011. Farewell to the blazing red hues!

Honey blonde curls gave Rihanna’s hair some California flavor at the 54th Annual Grammy Awards in February 2012. Remember that slinky, backless black dress? To this day that’s one of my favorite Rihanna looks.

Wearing platinum blonde locks and heavy fringe bangs, Rihanna is hardly recognizable in this shot snapped outside the Mandarin Hotel in London in March 2012.

Back to black curls, Rihanna returned to her edgy songstress style at the premiere of Universal Pictures’ Battleship in Los Angeles in May 2012.

Rihanna’s hairstyle at the September 2012 VMA Awards in Los Angeles, has me conjuring up images of 1930s-era Betty Boop, but somehow it works for her. It’s clean, it’s elegant and paired with a red lip—perfection.

Rihanna made Best Dressed lists everywhere when she wore this sophisticated curled hairstyle with ombre tones to the Grammy Awards in February 2013, in Los Angeles. Simply stunning.
