To keep split ends away, follow these haircare tips, and your hair will look amazing in no time at all!
1. Trim your hair regularly. The best way to get rid of split ends is to cut them off every 6 to 8 weeks. Once they're gone, focus on keeping the freshly trimmed ends healthy and avoid causing any new damage.
2. Go halfsies. Shampoo the top half, and condition the bottom half of your hair. Add a small amount of shampoo to the top of your head only, and when you rinse, it'll go through the rest of your hair and clean it with the leftover suds. Don't rub it in the lower portion of your hair because that can cause excessive drying and possible breakage to your ends. Applying conditioner only to the bottom of your hair will ensure that each strand absorbs moisture without clogging the pores on your scalp.
3. Use a wide-tooth comb. Combs with the teeth too close together can tug at hair and cause breakage, so always use a wide-tooth comb—especially when your hair is wet. I love this 100% pure beech wood one. There are also new brushes made specifically for wet hair, like the Tangle Teezer.
4. Eat right. The same healthy foods that benefit your body will also strengthen your hair. Here are the 5 essential nutrients you need for strong hair. Avoid diets that restrict calorie intake because they'll also starve your hair of important nutrients. A typical female needs a minimum of 1,200 calories each day—and more if you're really active. Hydration is also important, so be sure to get 8 glasses of water daily!
5. Towel-dry. Pat hair dry with a towel instead of tugging at it. I usually wrap mine in a Turbie Twist when I get out of the shower. Even better ... let it air-dry if you have the time! The one thing you should avoid altogether is using a hair dryer on a high heat setting. If you're in a hurry and have to use one to save time, use the lowest setting and leave the ends of your hair slightly damp.
6. Start at the top. When using heat tools such as curling irons or straighteners, begin at the top instead of at the ends. That way, the most fragile part of your hair—the ends—will be exposed to the heat for the least amount of time and you'll be less likely to develop split ends.
7. Dry-shampoo. Washing hair every day can make it dry, so skip a day a few times each week, and let the natural oils from your scalp protect and repair your hair. If your hair looks oily on your skip day, try my favorite dry shampoo on the roots.
8. Invest in the best. Quality tools really can make a difference in the health of your hair and scalp. When shopping for a brush, look for one that feels comfortable for the size of your hand, and make sure to get the proper bristles for your hair type . The best brush I ever owned is made by the famous Mason Pearson brush company out of London, England.
9. Protect it. Saltwater, sunlight, flat irons, and any number of external factors can do a number on your hair, so use protectant each day! My favorite spray right now is TRESemme Keratin Flat Iron Smoothing Spray. If you prefer an oil, my favorite is Macadamia Oil Healing Oil Treatment because it smells so good and makes my hair look really shiny.
10. Avoid harsh chemicals. Avoid chlorine and similar chemicals that are known to damage hair. If you have to go in a pool, put your hair under a swim cap and rinse it well immediately afterward. Try to avoid bleaching your hair, but if you insist on it, many hairstylists recommend you stay within a few shades of your natural hair color because extreme color changes can be damaging. If you're brunette and want to go blonde (or vice versa), go to a professional to ensure the least amount of damage.
