Don't Fear Bold,...

Don't Fear Bold, Bright Eyeliners

Sometimes you see a top or dress on the hanger and it just looks hideous/bizarre, and you think, “Who would look good in that?!” Then your friend urges you to “just try it on.” When you do, suddenly you’re like, “Ok, whoa. I look fabulous.” I think of brightly colored eyeliners that way. You won’t know how truly wearable and modern they can be until you try ‘em on! So take a second look at bold cobalt, minty fresh aqua, and vivid purple liners because they will truly surprise you and light up those gorgeous eyeballs of yours.

Before you start: Because a bright eyeliner is really the focal point of these eye looks, it’s always best to keep the rest of your eye area neutral, light, and even matte if the liner has shimmer or is especially bold. Warm matte browns look beautiful when contrasted against über-bright blues, for example.

Grape
Purple isn’t as intimidating and I consider it a “beginner bright.” Intro to Bright Liners 101, class in session. However, there are ways to use it beyond just a thin line on the top lash line. Because a reddish-purple like this can do so much for green, brown and hazel eyes, I like to see it really smudged out, surrounding the entire area in a soft haze of purple. Urban Decay 24/7 Glide on Eye Pencil in Vice is a rocking red-toned purple. I still used black eyeliner in the waterline to keep the look dramatic and avoid bringing out any redness in the area.

Teal
If the purple liner is a great “beginner bright,” I’d call teal the “intermediate level bright.” A teal color on the lower lash line only can really brighten up the eye area without overwhelming it with color. I think it’s best to still line the waterline with black or the teal to keep the look seamless. I used Sephora Flashy Liner Waterproof in Flashy Blue.

Cobalt
This ultra-bright color scares off many, but if you’re brave enough, it brightens up the whites of your eyes, brings your whole face to life, and creates an amazingly fresh look. I love to see it in a moderate cat-eye shape via a liquid eyeliner like Sephora Long-Lasting 12HR Wear Eye Liner in Fancy Blue.

Mint/Turquoise
I am so excited to see this color in collections this summer. A mint or turquoise eyeliner can do wonders for almost any eye color. Plus, it makes you look tanner instantly. You can even just wear it in the waterline to achieve this affect. I love an icy turquoise contrasted with a warm golden, coppery eye. Southwest chic. I have fallen super in love with the Stila Smudge Stick Waterproof Eye Liner in Turquoise.

Double Brights
This would be the advanced master class of wearing bold, bright eyeliners. Choose two colors in the same color family, like aqua and cobalt, and pair them together for a swimming-pool-cool look. Stila Smudge Stick Waterproof Eye Liner in Turquoise and Urban Decay 24/7 Glide on Eye Pencil in Chaos make a daring duo.
