Subscription boxes changed the beauty game. The monthly supply of goodies are one of our favorite things, but the beauty gurus behind HuesBox noticed that something was missing — needs for people of color weren't being addressed.
"If it was makeup, the coloring would be off," co-founder Jasmine Harris told MPR News. "Lipstick, the shades would be inappropriate for my skin tone, or hair products that were not made for kinkier textured hair, like mine."
So, they decided to make a change by developing HuesBox, delivering beauty boxes with products made specifically for people of color.
"This is by people of color, for people of color — not just African-Americans, Africans," Robin Harris, Jasmine's mother, told MPR. "We're talking about Asians, Hispanics, and American Indians because it's this missing component of other boxes that are out there."

The brand, which launched at the end of 2016, says its mission is to provide both products and networking opportunities to help support those already addressing the needs of people of color. The founders told MPR that these products are not what you'd typically find in stores — they'll be featuring products made by vendors of color, namely smaller brands without a big marketing budget, in the hopes that it will give them greater exposure.
"What you'll see in our box you won't see in a store," Robin Harris told MPR. "These are small business vendors who are looking for a way to get their products out and their voices out into the broader community."
The Harris' told MPR that each box will feature four to six sample-sized products, each rooted in different ethnic traditions. So, for example, the first box is focused around "detox" — including feminine hygiene tea used by Native American, Latino, African, and Asian women. Now, that's amazing.

Even more, the brand hopes to make a community to connect people of color in the beauty community.
"HuesBox is more than a subscription box service. It is a full-scale community created to connect people of color interested in all things health and beauty," says the beauty box's site.
Through blog posts, podcast episodes, video product reviews and product samples, HuesBox aims to bring to the forefront public discussions on health and beauty issues for people of color — and we couldn't be more excited to see it.
