What Is Microblading?...

What Is Microblading? The Celebrity Brow Trend You'll Want To Try

Did you overpluck your eyebrows in the '90s? Are you tired of penciling in your eyebrows every day? If you answered yes to either of these questions, then microblading might be an option for you.

If you've been up on beauty and celeb trends lately, you've probably come across the term "microblading." This eyebrow trend is so hot, but um, what exactly is it? And is it for you? We'll break down all the details!

What Is Microblading?

Microblading is a form of semi-permanent tattoo that will give you the eyebrows you've always dreamed of having. An eyebrow artist will manually deposit pigment into your skin using a "pen" tool very fine needles, called micro-needles—which is how the name "microblade" came to be. This tool creates very thin, hairlike strokes that blend naturally and look like real hair.

What's The Deal With Getting It Done?

Most places offer a consultation and, usually, the cost of the consult can be put toward your procedure if you decide to have it done. Your eyebrow artist will chat with you about what you're looking to achieve and will map out your brows to figure out what size and shape would look best on your face. They will stencil your new brows before using the pen so that you can get an idea of what you will look like after the procedure.

The first procedure takes anywhere from 1.5 to 2 hours. About 5 to 6 weeks later, your artist will do a touch-up (if need be) and make sure that your brows look how you want them to.

Does It Hurt?

Usually, a topical numbing agent can be applied and should make you comfortable, experiencing minimal discomfort. You should ask about this before showing up to your appointment as some places prefer you show up 15 to 20 minutes early for the cream to be applied. If the technician doesn't mention the numbing cream, definitely ask if you're worried.

Is There Any Downtime After The Procedure?

You shouldn't experience any severe discomfort and the majority of people go about their daily lives as normal the moment they step out of the salon.

"The treated area may feel a bit like sunburn afterwards and be slightly itchy, but there should be minimal discomfort," says tattoo artist Claire Vuillemot.

After your first appointment, your brows will be a bit darker than they will be after two to three weeks, so don't panic.

The healing process will take a little over a month. In the first 14 days following microblading, you should avoid tanning (naturally or artificially), swimming, excessive sweating, using a sauna, laser or chemical treatments, and you should avoid areas where heavy debris (like dust) is present. You should avoid touching the eyebrow area and do not pick, peel, or scratch any scabs that may form. A full list of things to avoid should be provided to you by your eyebrow artist.

As far as long-term care, many eyebrow specialists will encourage you to wear SPF 30 to protect your face and the sensitive skin around your new brows.

How Long Does It Last?

Since pigment is used instead of ink, this procedure is semi-permanent. Most procedures last 1.5 to 2 years before they need a touch-up. However, different skin types yield different results.

How Much Does It Cost?

You can expect to pay upwards of $500 for microblading. It's not uncommon for a salon to hold a deposit for your appointment.

Which Celebrities Are Fans Of Microblading?

Actress Bella Thorne had the procedure done last summer and shared it on her Snapchat. More recently, former Bachelorette star Ali Fedotowski recently showed off her new brows on Instagram. Check out the photos of these awesome brows below!
