Show Your True Colors With This Gorgeous Colorful Makeup Tutorial

From hair, to food, to makeup—colorful everything is on trend right now. If you want to nail the colorful eye makeup look without dipping into clown territory, this is the tutorial for you.

Colorful makeup is back in a big way. Whether you want something to rock at your favorite music festival, for a fun date night look, or just a pretty pop of color for spring, this colorful makeup tutorial has what you're looking for. Live a little bit bolder with these experimental colors. (And seriously, haven't you been wondering what to do with all of those fun colors in your favorite eyeshadow palette?) Makeup artist Danielle Stewart shows us how to nail the mermaid/unicorn/rainbow/whatever-it-is-we-love-it makeup trend flawlessly.

Follow these steps:

1. Prep your skin with moisturizer and primer. Fill in your brows with your favorite brow product. A fuller brow will look best with this colorful eye look. (See: Three Different Techniques For Filling In Eyebrows Flawlessly)

Colorful Eyeshadow Steps 2 & 3

2. Prime eyes with your favorite eye primer. Start by applying a transition color two shades darker than your skin tone, using a fluffy crease brush in a windshield wiper motion along the crease of your eyelid, from the inner to outer corner. Next, apply a purple eyeshadow using the same brush over the color you just applied. Using the same crease brush, apply a bright pink shadow just above the crease you've shaded. We used shades from Urban Decay Electric Pressed Pigment Palette, $24, MAC Eyeshadow in Corduroy, $16, and Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion - Eden, $20.

3. Pat (don't swipe) bright green eyeshadow on the lower inner to middle lid with a flat brush. Use the same brush and technique to apply teal eyeshadow to the outer lower lid. Use the brush to gently pat and blend the area where the colors overlap. Stewart's mantra is "When in doubt, pat it out." Swiping is a no-no.

Colorful Eyeshadow Steps 4 & 5

4. Apply bright blue shadow on top of the teal and blend gently into the crease with a tapered crease brush.

5. Highlight the inner corner of the eye with a light, shimmery shade using a small, flat brush.

Colorful Eyeshadow Steps 6 & 7

6. Use a small shader brush to apply teal eyeshadow under the inner to middle bottom lashline. Use the same brush to apply bright blue from the middle to outer corner of the bottom lashline.

7. Apply gel liner ot the top lashline with an angled brush. Apply bottom liner in the waterline. Add mascara, and false lashes if you want a more dramatic look.

Colorful Eyeshadow Steps 8 & 9

8. Apply foundation with your favorite foundation tool. Apply concealer under the eyes, and set foundation and concealer with a translucent powder. We used Charlotte Tillbury Magic Foundation in 12, $44, Frankie Rose Concealer in Toffee, $24, and AJ Crimson Universal Finishing Powder in Neutral Set, $30.

9. Add your favorite bronzer, blush, and shimmer highlighter to give your skin an extra glow. Be sure to keep these colors subtle to avoid looking clownish. We used Covergirl Queen Natural Hue Bronzer in Ebony Bronze, $7.99, Sleek Makeup Blush By 3 in Sprit, $10.99, and Becca Highlighter in Blushed Copper (limited edition).

Colorful Eyeshadow Step 10

10. Apply lip liner to give more shape to the lips, and go over lips with a fun, bright liquid lip color. We used MAC Lip Pencil in Nightmoth, $17.50, and Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lip Gloss in Bacca, $24.
