Get a hand-le on aging

Little things you can do every day to stave off "old lady" hands

As a busy hand model, and a 40-something mom (with no extra time on her hands. . .badump bump), I employ an easy routine to keep my hands in good shape—and so can you:

1.  Wash with a gentle, sulfate-free cleanser to nourish hands. Harsh soaps or dehydrating anti-bacterial washes can strip the thin, delicate skin on your hands. Also don dish-washing gloves when cleaning (or when embroiled in other messy situations). This not only protects your skin, it also minimizes the amount of hand washing you’ll have to do after the chore. Finally, gently pat (never wipe) your hands dry.

2. Replenish moisture after you wash your hands.  Look for a nutrient-rich cream like Hand Perfection Complete Day Cream  ($50; handperfection.com). It’s loaded with skin-friendly fatty acids and antioxidants to nourish skin, while helping combat signs of aging, such as wrinkles and age spots. The petroleum-free formula is also designed to stay on through multiple washings—and light-reflecting technology helps improve the appearance of your hands instantly.

3. Take a minute each day to focus on your nails and cuticles. Apply a nail oil to condition dry, jagged cuticles, as well as nourish and strengthen nails. Then gently push back cuticles with a washcloth while you’re in the shower—or after you have applied oil. (Try to avoid cuticle clippers—unless you have a hangnail).

4. Use an an anti-aging, hand-specific product at night while you sleep. It’s at this time that your skin is working to repair itself—and is best able to absorb and use active ingredients in skincare products.

5. Get in the habit of treating your hands like jewels—not tools. And allow actual tools (letter openers, scissors, bottle openers) to do the heavy lifting.

What’s your reaction?
