It's never too early to develop good skincare habits! No matter what age you are now, if you begin incorporating these 10 skincare tips into your daily routine today, in the years to come your skin will look healthier and more radiant!
1. Always wear sunscreen.
Repeated sun exposure can cause wrinkles, age spots, and even skin cancer. Develop the habit of wearing sunscreen every day, and make sure it protects the skin from both UVA and UVB rays. Dr. Doris J. Day, clinical professor of dermatology at New York University Medical Center, explains that a sunscreen containing zinc oxide is best because it blocks the sun but doesn't sink into skin--and therefore is hypoallergenic and won't irritate your skin. 2. Wash your face before bed.
After a long day at work or school, it's so easy to skip the suds and just fall asleep on the couch. (Been there, done that!) However, before your head hits the pillow, always remove your makeup and scrub away all the bacteria and impurities that settled on your face during the day. Leaving your makeup on too long can cause clogged pores, which can lead to breakouts. Plus, a dirty face will get makeup on your pillow, which can harbor bacteria, too!
3. Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate!
Your body needs to shed layers of dead skin, or your skin will appear dry, flaky, and uneven. You don't need anything fancy--regular granulated sugar will do just fine! Try experimenting with one of our DIY sugar scrub recipes, and pay special attention to areas like your elbows and knees, or any place your skin seems extra dry or ashy. Exfoliating twice a week is fine, anything more may cause skin irritation.
4. Moisturize everything.
The best time to moisturize is after you've showered and exfoliated. If you get in the habit of applying moisturizer as soon as you jump out of the shower, your skin will benefit greatly from it! The moisturizer can trap some of the water droplets from the shower and use that as extra hydration for your skin. Be sure to lightly pat yourself dry prior to applying the moisturizer, or you'll just turn into a slippery mess!
5. Find a good dermatologist.
A dermatologist will check your skin regularly for skin cancer, provide advice for your particular skin type, and can prescribe helpful anti-aging products like retinoids. Retinoids are helpful for treating acne, and their continued long-term use can reduce the appearance of fine lines and age spots. One commonly prescribed retinoid is Tretinoin, which is a form of Vitamin A that allows the skin to renew itself.
6. Avoid straws, frowning, and squinting.
Did you know repetitive facial movements can eventually cause wrinkles? Limit yourself to drinking through a straw only when you're drinking something that may stain your teeth, so the repetitive motion of pursing your lips together won't cause future wrinkles to form around your mouth. The same goes for frowning and squinting; put on a happy face to keep the frown lines at bay, and be sure to wear sunglasses to prevent lines around your eyes and forehead.
7. Don't smoke.
If something as simple as drinking from a straw can cause wrinkles around the mouth, can you imagine how bad cigarettes are for your skin? Not only are you constantly pursing your lips when you smoke, but you're also damaging the flow of oxygen to your skin. 8. Wash makeup brushes regularly.
Every time you touch a makeup brush to your face, you're adding oil and bacteria from your skin to the bristles of the brush. Over time, that can make for a pretty icky makeup brush! A dirty brush may transfer bacteria back to your skin and even into makeup containers. The easy solution is to clean your brushes at least once per month, and weekly would be even better!
