How to Properly Remove Makeup

Proper makeup removal is such an essential step toward having great, clear skin. No matter how tired you may be, taking off your makeup at night is an absolute must! Just using a makeup wipe simply isn’t enough; you can’t possibly get all that gunk out and get a nice, deep clean without being at your bathroom sink.

I’ve put together a quick how-to guide for taking off makeup the thorough but easy way. All you’ll need is your favorite cleanser, a basket of washcloths (you can get a bundle of at Target for under five bucks), as well as either a creamy makeup remover or a makeup remover oil. I tend to prefer an oil; something like the Shu Uemura Cleansing Beauty Oil, which has been my favorite for years. If you want to stay away from the high-end products, you can go with something as simple as the Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser and it’ll work just fine!

Here’s my trick, I take either a creamy cleanser or a makeup remover oil and work it into my skin, paying particular attention to my lash line. I gently work the remover into my lashes to dislodge the mascara and liner. For me rinsing with water just isn’t enough. I like to use a hot washcloth to wipe off the makeup. The steam is what helps get every last trace of makeup off, almost melting the makeup off of your face. This way you don’t have to go back and repeat one or more times! Don’t underestimate the power of steam! It’s my secret skincare weapon!

For the sake of keeping your pores in the best shape possible, I like to go back and use a cleanser just on my skin. Right now I’m obsessed with the Murad White Brilliance Gentle Cleanser! After a quick rinse I just pat dry and I’m done. I’m left with super clean skin that’s completely free of makeup and ready to receive any serums and creams!

After earning my Master’s degree in Communication Management in 2009, I figured it was time to combine my academic know-how with some expert consumer advice to bring all things beauty to my readers and viewers. My specialty? Skincare. I think we’re all at our most beautiful when we’re just down to moisturizer and lip balm, and I hope to make every woman who reads my content feel confident enough to rock the natural look.
