Skin Care Basics: The Four Things You Must Do Before Bed

For most of us, glowing skin doesn't just happen: You plan for it with a skin care routine designed to protect and beautify your face. Add these four steps to your routine, and you'll be glowing in no time.

Raise your hand if you hit the hay with makeup on several nights of the week. Raise your other hand if you only use moisturizer when your skin feels dry. Got both hands in the air? You might as well wave 'em like you just don't care, because your skin isn't getting any TLC. It's okay though. I'm going to help you with skin care basics to establish a routine and get your skin looking its beautiful best.

Cleanser
A good cleanser should remove both makeup and dirt. Gentler is better, and you'll want to make sure that your cleanser is safe to use around the eye area. Whether or not you wash once or twice a day can depend on your skin type. If I shower at night, I do not wash my face again in the morning as I have very dry skin and do not feel oily in the morning. However, if you wake up feeling oily, by all means, do a morning cleaning as well. Some excellent basic cleansers that work for nearly all skin types are:

Algenist Gentle Rejuvenating Cleanser
Philosophy Purity Cleanser
First Aid Beauty Face Cleanser

Serum
I like to think of serums as my treatment step. Serums are lightweight, readily-absorbed products that provide hydration. But more importantly, they provide brightening, anti aging, or anti-acne benefits. Serums give you benefits beyond what a moisturizer can deliver. Some of my favorites are:

Brightening: Ole Henriksen Truth Serum Collagen Booster
Anti Aging: Time in a Bottle
Anti Acne: Murad Exfoliating Acne Treatment Gel

Moisturizer
You will likely want two different types of moisturizers in your arsenal. I like to have a thick cream for night and a lighter moisturizer for day to wear under makeup. Your skin repairs itself overnight, so it's nice to lock in your serum with an ultra-hydrating night cream. Here are some of my favorite moisturizers for day and night.

Daily Moisturizer
Murad Essential C Moisture with SPF30
Peter Thomas Roth Max Daily Defense Moisture Cream SPF 30

Night Creams
Sephora Collection Age Defy Night Moisture Cream
Shiseido Ibuki Refining Moisturizer Enriched
bareMinerals Purely Nourishing Cream

Eye Cream
The skin around the eye area is delicate and wrinkles easily. We squint, we tug our eyes to get that perfect cat eye liner, and we rub our eyes when we're tired. Don't skimp on moisture here. Remember to apply eye cream only to the orbital bone, also known as the eye socket. Do not apply to eyelids and take special care not to get it near the tear duct as this can irritate your eye and cause you to wake up with puffy eyes. Remember to tap with your ring finger when applying. Apply day and night, and remember to wear sunglasses to prevent squinting.

Algenist Complete Eye Renewal Balm
Philosophy Eye Hope
Shiseido Ibuki Eye Correcting Cream

I hope you'll start with this basic skin care routine, adding in peels, oils, masks, and other steps as needed. You'll have beautiful, glowing skin before you know it!
