The United States may be the world leader on many fronts, but being a mom ain’t one of them.
According to USA Today, Save the Children’s 13th annual State of the World’s Mothers ranking of the best and worst places to be a mother has America in just 25th place. But, hey, at least it’s an improvement over last year’s 31st place ranking.
The foundation looks at 165 countries, noting all sorts of stats, from infant mortality to how many moms breast-feed to education levels of mothers to maternity leave policies, the newspaper reports.
So, the best country to be a mom? Norway. The worst? Niger, where one in six children die before age five—in Norway, the rate is one in 333, according to USA Today.
Here’s hoping all countries on the list improve next year. Being a mom can certainly be challenging, but it shouldn’t be dangerous for women or their children.
