We’ve heard of dieting like a caveman, but a new study shows it may be more about when those early ancestors ate than what they were shoving in their mouths.
ABC News reports the research done on mice found that little rodents that ate whatever amount they wanted during eight hours and spent the rest of the day fasting measured the same as mice fed a healthy diet, in terms of weight gain, risk for diabetes and high cholesterol.
“The gist of this study is that the timing and the number of hours you fast impact your weight gain,” Satchin Panda, the study’s lead author, tells the network. “Watch the times of day you eat as opposed to what exactly you eat. You don’t have to be as strict in counting calories.”
Now, we know humans are different from mice, but the idea that we can feast on all the cheese, wine, bread and chocolate we like—as long as we do it in an eight-hour time span? Well, that might just get us to give up our midnight snack habit once and for all. But we'll have to start tomorrow. Someone needs to finish this bag of Oreos first.
