Donna Karan: I started Super Saturday fourteen years ago with my friend Liz Tilberis who died of ovarian cancer.
More: Cancer also claimed another love of your life.
DK: Yes, my husband had lung cancer.
More: You must miss your husband.
DK: I was fortunate. He lived seven years with lung cancer. Normally people with lung cancer are expected to live a short time.
More: How did you come up with the Super Saturday idea?
DK: The idea of Super Saturday was to bring philanthropy and retail together, two things I know a lot about. It went from Liz’s backyard to what you see today.
More: Is your goal is to wipe out cancer?
DK: I have lost so many to cancer. I realize the importance of what it is like to go through something this.
More: Losing your husband and friend must have been a very painful time for you.
DK: It was awful.
More: Does it upset you that with all of the money raised and all of the celebs devoting their time, there is still no cure?
DK: I honestly believe the environment has so much to do with it.
More: What do you hope for?
DK: We have to find a cure, but at the same time, we have to applaud the people who have been given the opportunity to live so much longer.
