Maybe you blame your parents for your lack of height, your inability to carry a tune or your uneven teeth. Now you can blame them for your poor eating habits, too.
Two new studies in genetics have found that your diet can alter your DNA, so it’s possible to pass on your love for potato chips, LiveScience reports. Sorry, kiddos. Mama couldn’t help taking down all that Dairy Queen.
In one of the studies, researchers found that an adult’s diet “induces changes in all cells—even sperm and egg cells—and that these changes can be passed on to offspring,” according to the website.
On the positive side, the second study found that parents who eat well can affect their babies, too, LiveScience adds.
“It is possible that eating more omega-3 fatty acids, choline, betaine, folic acid and vitamin B12, by mothers and fathers, possibly can alter chromatin state and mutations, as well as have beneficial effects . . . leading to birth of a ‘super baby’ with a long life and a [lower risk] of diabetes and metabolic syndrome,” researcher Ram B. Singh tells the website. “This is just a possibility, to be proven by more experiments.”
We’ll remember this next time the kids refuse to eat their vegetables.
