Diamonds are a girl’s best friend. For Dame Elizabeth Taylor, they were also a great love (behind Richard Burton, natch). But because not every woman can have a jewelry collection valued at $30 million, Taylor created her White Diamonds scent. “[Fragrance] is the most accessible luxury,” noted Taylor shortly before her death last March.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of Taylor’s still best-selling scent. She drew inspiration from the flowers in her garden—narcissi, gardenias and lilies—in order to create a sensual floral. Taylor wanted to imbue the perfume with a sense of glamour, from the sparkling, faux diamond-encrusted bottle to the name, a reflection of her love for sparkle. However, her primary goal was not to represent herself, but to create a scent that she loved to wear and could share with others. "We have really succeeded in giving women a little bit of luxury every day," Taylor remarked about the 20th anniversary of White Diamonds. She aimed to share a little sparkle with everyone who wore the scent.
To celebrate the anniversary of its debut, White Diamonds Elizabeth Taylor is available as a gift set ($60; Click to Buy) with a sleek new bottle—still wrapped in faux diamonds, of course.
