Kingsolver: [Laughs] My parents, on the other hand, knew nothing when I was 19, and now they’re so smart. So that happens. But the real earthquake for me was becoming a mother. Of course, I care about other people’s children, and I think I would be an environmentalist even if I didn’t have kids. But before I was a mother, saving the world was an abstraction, and suddenly I knew exactly whom I was saving it for.
