10 Movie-Inspired Halloween DIY Costumes

Creating an original costume can be stressful and expensive. Here are 10 DIY ideas based on movies we love

Dressing up as a bridesmaid for Halloween takes on a whole new meaning thanks to the funny ladies of "Bridesmaids." To DIY this costume, you could find a hideous hot-pink dress as seen on the movie poster or you could dress up as your favorite character. One of our favorites is former MORE cover girl Melissa McCarthy as Megan. To look the part of Megan, you need a short-sleeve button-down shirt, string of pearls, Kangol hat, ill-fitting pants and some sporty sandals. We don't recommend walking around with 10 golden retriever puppies, but extra points if you carry a toy version of one.

A League of Their Own

Who wouldn't want to be on a team with Madonna and Tom Hanks? All you will need to become a Rockford Peach is a peach-colored shirtdress, a red belt, red knee-highs and a red baseball hat. Find some iron-on “R” patches to add to the hat and the sleeve of the dress dress, and you’re ready to play ball.  Amazon has the full uniform on its site for those of you who aren’t into DIY. And don't forget, "There's no crying in baseball!"

The Birds

Alfred Hitchcock loved two things: suspense and blondes. Start your transition into a Hitchcock blonde by buying a platinum wig, several fake black crows, a bag of black feathers and fake blood. Then find an inexpensive green-colored skirt suit, or you can wear a simple black pencil skirt and find a green jacket that you don’t mind ruining. You will need to be a little crafty for this one and glue the birds/feathers on the suit jacket. Finish with some fake blood and then practice your look of terror.

There's Something About Mary

It’s a toss-up as to which costume would be funnier, Mary with her "hair gel" or Magda the original “tanning (grand)mom.” To create Mary’s look, you need a simple red dress with spaghetti straps and some extra-strong-hold hair gel. For Magda, a brightly colored tunic, blonde curly wig (or if you’re a natural blonde, set your hair in rollers), a small dog stuffed animal and tons of bronzing cream in a shade that is at least three times as dark as your natural skin tone. Bonus if you carry around a sheet of aluminum foil.

Fox Pictures

Out of Africa

One word comes to mind when describing Meryl Streep aka Karen Blixen’s wardrobe from “Out of Africa”: khaki. It should cost virtually nothing to channel her safari look. All you will need is a khaki skirt or pair of pants, a crisp white shirt and brown riding boots. Since most of us already own those things, the one item you may want to invest in is a khaki pith helmet like this one from Amazon.

Universal Pictures

Pulp Fiction

It doesn't get more bad-ass than Mia Wallace in Quentin Tarantino's cult classic. And the brilliant thing about becoming Mia is how easy and cheap it will be. Investing in the iconic black bob wig is key. After that, a white button-down, black pants and red lipstick is all you will need. Oh, and don't forget the (candy) cigarette.

Grab that hairspray and practice your dance moves. All you need for this awesomely ’80s ensemble is a loose-fitting gray sweatshirt cut at the neckline. Finish the look with black leggings, pink leg warmers and a pink sweatband. Then prepare to dance like you've never danced before.

Paramount Pictures

The Hunger Games

To volunteer as a Tribute, you will need olive-green cargo pants, combat boots, a black anorak, a backpack and bow and arrows (fake, obviously). And if you have short hair, definitely a long brunette wig to create Katniss's amazing braid. Congratulations, you are now a girl on fire.

Lionsgate Films

The Great Gatsby

F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic was reinvented this year in Baz Luhrmann's adaptation starring Carrie Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan. Transform yourself into Daisy with a flappers costume (preferably in a light color), tons of pearl jewelry and a dazzling headpiece, of course.

Warner Bros.

Horror-movie fans should be excited about the newly remade classic starring Chloe Grace Moretz and Julianne Moore. To transform yourself into Carrie, find a light-colored silk dress and a bunch of fake blood. Lay the dress on your lawn or somewhere you won't mind getting messy and go to town with the "blood." Then add a tiara and be prepared to give little children nightmares.
