Walking down the aisle with some very cute canine attendants

What happens when your groom’s best man is his four-legged best friend? In Wedding Dogs: A Celebration of Holy Muttrimony, authors Kate Preston Toepfer and Sam Stall follow well-loved pets as they join their owners’ ceremonies. Did the authors witness some disasters? Well, sure, Toepfer writes, “But in the end, we all know that at a wedding it’s much easier to contain a misbehaving dog than a misbehaving human relative.” Some well-trained examples follow.

Pretty in Pink: Chihuahua Angua VonHumperding served as an honorary bridesmaid for Cassandra and Hal Hogue, walking down the aisle with the bride’s mother, brother and their other dog, Brisco, at a vineyard wedding in Nixa, Missouri.

Monroeville, Pennsylvania bride Jenna Palmieri couldn’t quite trust her two half-Chijuaua, half-miniature-schnauzers not to bark through the ceremony, so she invited them to her wedding shower. The dogs also accompanied the bridal party to the salon that morning. At left, Sidney gazes his approval.

Kissing the bride (sloppily): Siberian husky Banff with owner Erika Hasler-Gentile. At the Montreal, Quebec ceremony, Wedding Dogs reports, Banff even “refrained from peeing in the bushes until after the ‘I dos’ were exchanged.”

Every party needs a hostess, and that’s what Princess became at this South Florida home wedding. Bride Danielle Mante says the bichon frise owned by her father and stepmother “worked the crowd” like a pro, generously leaping from couch to couch.

Shih tzu Daisy and her pack mate Harry-Winston served as ring bearers at Kaitlyn Kulesus’s Marshfield, Missouri wedding. Their reward: doggie cupcakes.

Weimeraner Sadie didn’t crash the ceremony, but she did make sure to get her picture taken. “She hammed it up real nice,” bride Jacqui Russell says of her pet’s participation in the Forth Worth, Texas photo shoot.

Travis and Jennifer Ward’s Chihuahua, Toby, donned black tie and wagged his tail for their Virginia Beach event. Though the couple concluded he was too active for their ceremony, he helped corral the kids attending for post-wedding photographs.
