American Violet

Nicole Beharie (right, with Alfre Woodard) stars in the powerful true story of a struggling single mother who gets swept up in a drug raid and decides to sue the DA rather than plea-bargain, boldly exposing racial prejudice in her Texas town. (In theaters April 17)
Magnolia Pictures

Easy Virtue

A 1920s American race car driver (Jessica Biel) disrupts her spouse’s very British family in this fizzy adaptation of Noel Coward’s comedy of manners. Among the movie’s virtues are a jazzy soundtrack (Biel sings!) and Kristin Scott Thomas (far left, with Biel) and Colin Firth as the bickering parents, both unhappy in their own ways. (In theaters May 22)
Giles Keyte/Sony Pictures Classics

Julia

Tilda Swinton (left) is flat-out amazing as an alcoholic in desperate straights-no need to pity her, she does plenty of that herself-who kidnaps a boy and holds him for ransom. Unsympathetic yet always riveting, Swinton’s Julia (inspired by John Cassavetes’s Gloria) is a woman who went beyond the verge and over the edge quite a few miles back. (In theaters May 8)
Scott Saltzman/Samuel Goldwyn Films
