She founded (with Keren Craig) the couture evening label Marchesa, worn by such stars as Nicole Kidman.
This fall we are introducing Marchesa Voyage, sportswear with an average price of $350.

Her company’s muse is Marchesa Luisa Casati.
She was a socialite at the turn of the 20th century who walked around with a pair of cheetahs in diamond collars. She saw herself as a work of art, and that’s why she’d be great to design for.

Her Project Runway role
What’s inspiring [as a judge] is watching different interpretations of fashion. What is not so much fun is letting someone go. I’ve had debates with other judges, and it gnaws at me when I think they chose the wrong person to send home.

Kiddie couture
My mother knew I’d be a designer when she saw me cut up clothes when I was three. She showed me photos of costumes I made for A Midsummer Night’s Dream at 13, and they didn’t look much different from what I design for Marchesa!

New rules
What’s so wonderful about our era is that age isn’t as important. You should dress in the way that makes you feel confident and happy. If you feel good in what you’re wearing, then you’re going to look good.

Changing priorities
As I get older, I don’t worry as much. I’m a mother with two small children, so I need to make quicker decisions and not fret about them. I don’t have time.

Her producer spouse
Is Harvey [Weinstein] fashionable? No. But he loves the art in fashion. As for his own look, that’s not complicated. I just order the same tuxedo for him again and again.
