ABC is trying its hand at the world of live musicals this year with a two-hour special event of The Wonderful World of Disney: The Little Mermaid Live, and this is talking crabs and seagulls-big.
The performance, which will be produced by Hamish Hamilton, Ian Stewart, David Jammy, Katy Mullan, and Richard Kraft, will follow our favorite youngest daughter of King Triton and her sea creature friends. And while we'd by lying if we said we weren't (still) obsessed with the 1989 film's musical numbers, seeing them performed live is probably going to be one of the highlights of the year.
This version of the film is going to have a twist, though. It will apparently mix live scenes with animation from the original Disney classic, with ABC saying that they will be using cutting-edge technology (and an unrevealed as of yet celebrity cast) to deliver a "never-before-seen live action/animation hybrid television experience."
This isn't the only Little Mermaid adaption in the works for Disney right now, though. Late last year it was announced that a live-action film remake of the classic is also in the works, with songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda as part of the collaboration.
TBH, the only problem we're having with this news right now is that the premiere of the special isn't until October 3. In the meantime, stay tuned to MORE for updates on the cast and crew, and brush up on those "Under the Sea" lyrics in the shower. It's going to be a great time!
