Dee Wallace: From 'E.T.' Star to Author and Motivational Speaker

The single mom from E.T. reminisces about the 1982 film, dishes on the new Blu-ray edition, debuting October 9 in honor of the film's 30th anniversary, and shares what caused her to recreate her life.

More: What did you learn?
DW: I thought, How can I go out and empower myself? I began asking, How can I make myself better instead of shutting myself down to protect myself from what just happened?

More: You made reference to being angry. Given your successful Hollywood career, what could Dee Wallace possibly be angry about?
DW: Read my book. I started out in a very poor family with an alcoholic father who went on to commit suicide.

More: Point made.
DW: We have all been betrayed, raped, abandoned and disappointed at some moment in our lives, and we keep blaming them for not being the joy and love we want them to be. I wanted to be happy and enjoy the gifts I have.
