How to Wear Neon

Balance bold with buff For a sophisticated look, contrast this überbright citrus with quiet colors such as tan, buff or gray. The button-down with khakis? Perfect.

Opt for traditional styles If you’re up for an of-the-moment color, find it in a familiar style or shape—for example, in the shirt, tote and shorts. That will keep it from looking too young.

Use texture It not only adds visual interest but also quiets the neon by inflecting it with light and shadow, as demonstrated by the clutch and scarf. Feathers count, as in the look from Peter Som's Spring 2012 show, left.

When in doubt, accessorize If neon’s out of your comfort zone, test the trend’s waters with a bag or jewelry.
