When you wear dresses with smart shapes and clever design details, your midlife middle will be nobody’s business but your own

(Color) Block It Out

Clever use of color blocking can visually slim you. Here, the black swath creates the shadow against the white side panel, while the gathers at the belly provide extra coverage ($134, macys.com).

Fit to Be Tied

Thanks to the perfectly placed knot accent, this black stunner will cover a multitude of sins (or extra doughnuts, as the case may be). Sure, you can wear it for a dressy occasion, but you can also put on flats and spend the day gallery hopping with a friend ($248, anntaylor.com).

Checks and Balances

Apart from the vibrant Ikat print, which we love, the batwing sleeves add volume to your upper body so that your belly will look smaller by comparison ($118, maggylondon.com).

Hide and Seek

Looking for color combined with comfort? Voilà! Wear this dress lower on your hips and let the blouson top flutter over your middle ($165, abiferrin.com).

Waist Not

The slightly higher waistline here will put the accent (visually) on the slimmest part of your middle (it’s almost Empire but not quite), while the soft gathers will fall over any, ahem, protrusion ($228, lordandtaylor.com).

Wrap and Roll

The faux wrap style is flattering on most, but the genius of this dress is what’s inside: hidden panels of shapewear that ensure a smooth silhouette ($24, spiegel.com).

Under Cover

Cocktails, anyone? If you have an occasion to play dress-up, consider this frock. Love the lace overlay, love the peplum detail and really love the specially designed compression fabric that firms and shapes. The company insists you’ll look a size smaller ($300, newyorkdress.com).

Easy Does It

Introducing a sheath that can be dressed up or down, worn day or night, with a cut that will give you all the breathing room you need ($395, nordstrom.com).

Tied and True

The abstract geometric print is great at hiding your larger bits, but it’s the smartly placed front tie that does the work of banishing your belly ($55, karenkane.com).

Shape Smarts

The slight A-line style will skim your body, while the bold print across your middle will camouflage. Too cold?  Wear with tights and either tall riding boots or booties ($330, saksfifthavenue.com).

Beautiful dresses - but none of these models have a belly to hide!

Most of these dresses are too short for me. Are you really hitting the demographic you are after with these dresses? I'm interested in fashion, and I'm 57, but I find that these selections are mostly
geared more towards 40.
