Sleeveless Tunic

The tunic’s length provides coverage, the cardigan on top adds softness. Wang likes the tops "fuller through the body"and belts them to control volume and add interest. Simply Vera, available at kohls.com. Jersey tank, $34; cotton and rayon cardigan, $58; Lurex hat, $26; metal, rhinestone and faux pearl necklace, $36

Vera Wang’s Layered Look

The trick to artful layering is to create visual interest without adding bulk, and designer Vera Wang (that’s her, far left, with me), has been mixing textures and playing with proportions for 20 years, since the start of her design career. "Mix it up," Wang instructs. "Each element looks better, richer, more interesting when it’s put with something else, so clothes don’t look so serious." Simply Vera, all available at kohls.com. On Vera (top to bottom): metal and beaded necklace, $36; cotton and rayon blouse, $58; faux leather jacket, $78; cotton leggings, $20; faux leather booties, $80. On Susan (top to bottom): metal necklace, $48; cotton and rayon cardigan, $48; polyester chiffon dress, $78; cotton leggings, $20; faux leather heels, $70.

Short Jacket

The jacket’s shrunken, fitted silhouette is more modern. Don’t tuck in tops-let them hang out, layer over layer. Wang likes to mix lots of shades. "It doesn’t have to match," she says. Simply Vera polyester, rayon and spandex blend blazer, $78; modal jersey tank, $34; faux pearl necklace, $90

Long Coat

The coat is an alternative to a suit jacket. Wear something with sleeves underneath; add necklaces of different lengths on top. Simply Vera cotton, polyester and metal brocade jacket, $88; metal and rhinestone necklace, $32, and cuff, $42; felt and faux stone necklace, $90

Slim Pants

Part of the Wang gestalt is to simplify the bottom half, creating a longer, leaner look. A flat waistband helps overlayers lie nicely, another plus. Wang’s tip: Pants should hit just below the ankle (bunching adds bulk). Simply Vera polyester, spandex and rayon blend pants, $54; faux leather pumps, $69

Dress

It’s easy one-stop dressing that’s also slimming, because a dress creates a single, fluid line. You can layer underneath (blouse, long-sleeve tee) or add something on top (jacket, sweater). Simply Vera polyester chiffon dress, $44; metal and faux pearl necklace, $90; Only Hearts nylon tulle shirt, $44; 212-724-5608

Embellished Tee

Wang’s T-shirt is dressed up with sparkle and texture so that it can be worn day or night. Always "look like you aren’t trying too hard," she says. Simply Vera embellished T-shirt, $44; acrylic and wool blend sweater, $78; faux pearl and ribbon necklace, $48
