How to Wear Matching Separates

Trends might come and go, but separates are forever. See how to wear matching separates in a way that's fresh and fun.

As a fan of fashion, I take inspiration from street style blogs as well as the runway. I see a lot of trends roar onto the scene and then quietly fade away. But one look that's always fresh is matching separates. You can wear each piece with other items of clothing for added versatility (and wardrobe value!). Or wear them together for a look that's exciting. Here are two bloggers that did it right, plus my take on matching separates. Check it out:

Style bloggers Blair of Atlantic Pacific (left) and Shea of Peace Love Shea (middle) exemplify the trend. Both wear body-con pencil skirts and crop tops. It's a great look that requires zero thought! The great thing about matching separates is that the trend comes in a flurry of styles from crop tops and pencil skirts, blazers and trousers, shorts and a jacket.

For my look (right), I paired a white Zara pencil skirt with a white Forever 21 turtleneck crop top. Matching separates are usually purchased from the same brand but it's easy to create the look with monochromatic colors from various retailers like I did. The secret to getting it right is to make sure the colors are a perfect match. Don't be afraid to pull these pieces apart and wear them with different things--a great chunky sweater for my skirt and some wide leg trousers for the turtleneck, perhaps?

Emily Cholakian

I started my blog, Stiletto Beats, in 2010 as an assignment for my Fashion Journalism class and quickly fell in love. After years of blogging about fashion news and inspirations I decided to take it to the next level, incorporating my daily outfits and personal life. A little about me? Well, I love bunnies, eat way too much candy and love to write sappy quotes about life, love and surviving my quarter life crisis in Los Angeles. Stiletto Beats is my fashion diary dedicated to anyone who has experienced the happiness that comes from the perfect pair of shoes or the perfect song on a not-so-perfect day.
