Thanks to a rethink featuring swanky fabrics and designer goodies (intricate beading, for example), this is clearly catwalk ready. Click through for the most desirable looks.

The Original: Teva

It took a Grand Canyon river guide to realize that the paddlers—slipping on rocks in shoes that had lousy traction and were quickly soaked—required better footwear. Teva launched in 1984; the shoes' innovative jacquard webbing straps were introduced in 1986. This season, looking for bright new colors like fuchsia.

Tip From the Runway: Play with Proportion

Layer something voluminous over something narrow (a skirt, to the left, but skinny; cropped pants would also work). This super-strappy sandal is busy, and that's why it works.

Tips From the Runway: Use Color

The bright-yellow sandals accentuate the same color in the dress. Appliquéd jewels add the luxe factor (skip the leg warmers).

Tips From the Runway: Dress It Up

When the sandals are made with velvet straps and crystal embellishment, they can look decidedly fabulous. Paired with all black in a mix of lavish fabrics and textures, the shoes are almost black tie appropriate.

Use Them as an Accent

When you wear soft silhouettes (silk paljama pants, a flowy skirt), these sandals add the unexpected.

Avoid Leggings

They're too casual and downgrade the entire look. Crave the comfort? Wear narrow pants with a hint of stretch.

Go Bare

The sex appeal of a flash of thigh will mute the utilitarian vibe that lingers around these sandals. A pedicure also helps.
