Study finds flirting helps women negotiate better deals

Wanna get a great deal? Start batting those eyelashes, ladies. You need to be able to flirt.

The Independent in the U.K. reports a new study shows flirting can help a woman increase the success of negotiating a deal by a third. It can actually knock 20 percent off the asking price of a car.

“We found that flirtation … conveys assertiveness and power, from someone who is also concerned about satisfying their own interests,” study leader Dr. Laura Kray tells the newspaper. “… Feminine charm is a strategic behavior aimed at making the person you are negotiating with feel good in order to get them to agree to your goals.”

Need to brush up on your flirting skills? Take a cue from Mad Men’s Joan Holloway, the study suggests. Um, maybe the researchers didn’t see all of last season. There’s flirting, and then there’s … well, we won’t spoil it for you if you’re behind on your TiVo, but she takes flirting to a whole new extreme.

The study also singles out Madeleine Albright, former U.S. secretary of state, as someone who used “feminine charm” successfully.

Yes, that’s a much better example. And we say that with a coquettish wink.
