Silly question maybe. But a couple of days ago I was thinking about the very first handbag my mother ever bought me and how that chic 70’s bag I remember more today than probably 95% of the other handbags I’ve bought over the years. She gotit for me when I was starting third grade so that was about 1974. It was a dark denim fabric on the front and back and a three inch wide band of maroon leather that ran down one side, along the bottom, up the other side and continued on as a shoulder strap. And the best part,,,it had grommets studding the should strap.. The front had a piece of denim that flapped over to close with one of those metal closures you twisted from horizontal to vertical. Remember those? I loved that purse and find myself subconsciously looking for one at flea markets and thrift shops. What was the very first purse you ever owned?

I really don’t, what I do know is that the people who make handbags could not be using them. they do not have a clue of what a woman desire in a handbag. Some are too tiny some are like trunks. The large ones are heavy before you add anything to them. I want a bag that looks good but is functional to my use and please I don’t mean the silly compartment bags. so maybe you,Jamie can do some research and if you come up a bag made for a women’s needs I’ll be your first customer. This might sound funny but next time check out the faces of the women in the handbag section in any store you will see what i mean. Handbags, handbags everywhere and then see how many make it to the cashier. |

I don't know if this was my first purse but it is the earliest one I remember. I actually macramed one that I used in grade school. I made it after the owl necklace, my first project. It actually wasn't half bad and was in style in the late 60s. Even lined it was some fabric. Anyone else remember doing macrame?
Diane, I totally did macrame! Have you noticed that the owl motifs are coming back in? |

Hi all. I can clearly remember my first handbag. It was my First Communion Handbag. A box like purse made of " Patent Leather". (sp?) I had embossed flowers and cross on it. Oh my gosh I was so proud. We were a large family (six kids) with little extra money for such an extravagance. The year was 1960. I was just 6 years old. Inside was a rosary bead set. tiny bible a hankerchief and a dine in case of an emergency. Oh and white gloves. Thanks for unearthing these memories.
Your welcome Jaqueline. Isn’t it fun to remember things like our first handbag. And isn’t it interesting that we remember it so well. |

Love the grommets! And I thought of my first purse. It may not have been my actual first but it was the first one I loved. It was brown leather and it matched my weejun loafers. This might have been sixth grade. It was a smooth brown leather bag with a slim shoulder strap and a flap that folded over, and it came with stick-on gold initials. So my big sister helped me stick on my little initials MCJ. I wore that purse every day. And inevitably one of the initials peeled off, and I stuck it back on with a piece of scotch tape. Can you imagine? But we couldn't afford to get me a new purse, and I loved that one so much. I carried it around for months with that scotch tape on it. That was my first handbag.
Mimi, Could you imagine us taping something back onto our purses today? That’s what I love about being young, we just didn’t care. Thanks for sharing, loved the story. Jamie |
