Gabby Douglas: ‘What’s Wrong with My Hair?’

Olympic star says she’s not changing her ’do, so just get over it

by Lesley Kennedy • Reporter

Gabby Douglas had the world cheering when she became the first African-American gymnast to win the individual all-around Olympic gold medal last week. She was also the first American to win both the all-around and team events at the same Olympics. So what’s with all the jeering about her hair?

USA Today reports the 16-year-old’s ’do has had the Twitter-verse twittering, with detractors calling her straightened hair unkempt. Well, that’s just too bad, the gymnast says.

“I don’t know where this is coming from,” Douglas says, according to the newspaper. “What’s wrong with my hair? I just simply gelled it back, put some clips it and put it in a bun. Are you kidding me? I just made history. And you’re focusing on my hair? I just want to say we’re all beautiful inside out. I don’t think people should be worried about that. Nothing is going to change. So you might as well stop with all the comments.”

Now that’s what we call gold.
