Senator Calls Staff ‘Too Fat’ for Cupcakes

Harry Reid gave sweet treats to reporters instead.

In our experience, it’s rare to see a journalist turn down free food—especially when it’s of the cupcake variety—but to snag the sweets at the expense of a U.S. senator’s staff? Wait . . . are those chocolate sprinkles?

Political publication The Hill reports that Senator Harry Reid (D-Nev.) had one of his team hand out a box full of treats from Georgetown Cupcakes, the store featured on TLC’s DC Cupcakes reality show, to a group of reporters earlier this week.

“My caucus likes me a lot, so they gave me a great big box of cupcakes,” he said, according to The Hill. “And I said, ‘What could I do with these?’ My wife and I aren’t going to eat them all. My staff is far too fat anyway . . . And some of you, looks like you could use a cupcake.”

No word on whether his staff appreciated being called chubby—or whether the press felt flattered. All we know is we’d be happy to take cupcakes off anyone’s hands. Even if you call us fat.
