And They’re Off!

Registration closed in February for the 2010 More/Fitness Women’s Half Marathon, and demand was high. The event took place in New York’s Central Park this past weekend, on Saturday, April 25th. It was our seventh annual half marathon.

Running for Funding

The event raised nearly $20,000 for CARE, an organization that empowers women around the world to help end global poverty. As participant Maria Gandolfo remarked while catching her breath upon completing the course, "It’s wonderful this was all for a good cause."

Reaching the Finish Line, Rain or Shine

The temperature was 47 degrees at the 8:00 a.m. start, with a driving rain that continued through the afternoon. Most participants wore water-resistant rain gear and, in many cases, plastic garbage bags. Weather aside, the women were encouraged to ‘hang tough’ by the many supporters who were on hand to cheer.

Soggy in the City

As host, Sex and the City actress Kristin Davis added her natural grace and enthusiasm to the proceedings. The weather was cold, though, even for the hot performer Davis, who’ll be on the cover of May’s Fitness issue. "Talk about Soggy in the City!" said Lesley Jane Seymour, Editor in Chief of More. "Kristin Davis jumped up and down to keep warm on the stage with me as we watched thousands of women move up to the starting gates."

Girl Power!

Runners represented all 50 states and everyone— from first-time runners to award winners— partook in the day-long event, celebrating the health and fitness of women of all ages. Along the 13-mile course, participants and supporters reliably shouted, "Girl power!"

She Set a New Record

The first athlete to cross the finish line was Sally Meyerhoff, 26, of Scottsdale, AZ, who, despite the rain, set a new event record time of one hour, 14 minutes, and 40 seconds. "I felt really good out there today, and the support from all the other women was amazing," said Meyerhoff, who competed in a blue running skirt and wore her red hair in pigtails. Following Meyerhoff, clinching second and third place, respectively, were Colleen De Reuck, 46, of Boulder, CO, and Victoria Fiddick, 44, of Bermuda.

All of You Set a New Record

Despite the challenging conditions, the half marathon had a record 6,360 finishers. This year’s runners and walkers showed true grit and sensational spirit dashing through chilly, wet Central Park.

The Biggest Losers at the Half Marathon

The Biggest Loser contestants Nicole Brewer (Season 7), Cherita & Victoria Andrews and Migdalia "Miggy" Cancel (Season 9) also participated in the race. Ms. Brewer confessed to not loving the weather, but said of her experience and running mates, "I’m happy I did it. And I’m happy I was here to support my friends."

Running Runs in the Family

The daughter of Olympic gold medalist Joan Benoit Samuelson ran—and finished third in her age group, leaving her famous mother to comment in an email, "I guess it is time for me to exit left."

The Finish Line

Everyone had her own angle on the race. Sisters went as pairs. Friends competed against each other. And individuals competed against themselves. One group was even there to celebrate a friend’s wedding engagement. But if the participants were diverse, they did have one thing in common, which was the goal of making it to the finish line without quitting. Everyone had her own angle on the race.
