ANTIHISTAMINES

Over the Counter:  Benadryl, Zyrtec, Claritin
Rx:
Clarinex, Allegra

Possible Side Effects:  Inhibited arousal; dry vaginal tissue

Sex Solution: Use over-the-counter vaginal lubricants and moisturizers.

ANTI-DEPRESSANTS

Over the Counter:  None
Rx: SSRI antidepressants like Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft; SSRI relatives like Effexor; tricyclics such as Elavil, Sinequan

Possible Side Effects: Decreased desire; delayed orgasm

Sex Solution: Decrease your dosage.  Talk to your doctor about taking short drug holidays.  Switch to anti-depressants less apt to cause side effects, like Wellbutrin, Remeron, or Cymbalta.    Add a sex enhancing drug.

ANTIANXIETY DRUGS
Over the Counter:  None
Rx: Xanax, Valium

Possible Side Effects:   Decreased desire; delayed orgasm

Sex Solution: Decrease your dosage or add a  sex-enhancing drug.  Consider switching to cognitive behavior therapy.  Try meditation and exercise.

HYPERTENSION MEDICATIONS
Over the Counter:  None
Rx: Diuretics (Aldactone, Hygroton, Esidrix) and betablockers (Tenormin, Lopressor, Inderal, clonidine)

Possible Side Effects:  Decreased desire; dry vaginal tissue; difficulty reaching orgasm

Sex Solution: If you’re on a nonselective beta 1 or 2 blocking  agent, ask about switching to a selective antagonist.  If you are on a thiazide diuretic, ask about a loop diuretic.

HORMONAL BIRTH CONTROL METHODS
Over the Counter:  None
Rx: The Pill, Depo Provera, progesterone mini pills

Possible Side Effects:  Decreased desire; inhibited arousal

Sex Solution: Use nonhormonal methods (IUDs, diaphragm, condoms) or switch to the vaginal hormone NuvaRing.
