More reasons not to ignore hearing problems: Sudden hearing loss could indicate an oncoming stroke, according to preliminary research done in Taiwan. Gradual loss, especially at an early age, can be a symptom of a tumor. For instance, Candace Talmadge, 55, of Lancaster, Texas, started losing her hearing when she was in her forties but didn’t present her problem to a doctor until four years ago. Her physician then diagnosed her with an acoustic neuroma, a noncancerous tumor of the cells that cover the ear nerve. Had the growth not been removed, Talmadge could have suffered brain injury or died. In rare cases, hearing loss can also be one of the first symptoms that you’ve developed multiple sclerosis.
Bottom line If you keep asking people at home and work to repeat themselves, schedule a visit with your doctor.
