Things you hope for when you sign up for online dating: Common hobbies, attraction, someone you can laugh with. Things you’d rather not end up with: Herpes.
But that’s what a woman from Beaverton, Ore., got after a date with a Portland man she met on eHarmony. Now a jury says the retired dentist who gave the woman genital herpes owes her $900,000 for pain and suffering, the Portland Oregonian reports.
According to the newspaper, the two had sex once and the woman, whose case was filed under a pseudonym, testified that “she asked her date to wear a condom and he said OK, but the next thing she knew he wasn't wearing a condom and it was too late. Afterward, as they were lying in bed and talking about the chemistry between them, she said he broke the news to her: He had herpes. She kicked him out of her house.”
The Oregonian notes that this is the first case of someone suing a person for intentionally giving another person herpes in the state to go to trial.
"Ninety-nine percent of the people who find themselves in [her] situation simply wring their hands and do nothing," says Randall Vogt, the woman’s lawyer. "They know if they file a lawsuit, it's going to be hotly contested. It's going to be embarrassing. It's going to be massively unpleasant."
Kind of like herpes.
