How to Start a Foodie...

How to Start a Foodie Mom Blog

Are you a food lover, have great ideas about meal planning, or create fabulous recipes you cannot imagine keeping to yourself? Then you might consider creating a food blog. Here are a few easy tips to getting started as a Web foodie.

Blog Themes
This may sound rather rudimentary, but a food-related blog theme is vital to any foodie blog either in your blog title, logo, or graphical elements. Essentially you want potential readers to know you are a food blogger right off the bat. Don’t keep them guessing; make sure they know that you blog about food within the first couple of seconds they arrive on your blog. If you don’t know how to design your own blog, there are several blog designers listed in my marketplace to choose from. They will be able to help you design a blog around a culinary theme.

Photographs
Some of the best food blogs like SimplyRecipes and ChocolateandZucchini are fabulous, award-winning food blogs because the authors complement their topnotch writing with amazingly crisp, professional photos of their edible creations.

For most of us who either don’t have photography training or a high-priced camera to boot, photography will not be your strong suit or selling point. But as many bloggers have learned, nothing can compare to strong, compelling writing. So even if you don’t have beautiful photos to spruce up your recipes, take heart and snap photographs anyway. Your readers will appreciate seeing your finished dish.

And if you would like to have more beautiful photographs for your readers to sink their eyes into you can use this opportunity to take a photography class or invest in a camera with a specialized lens.

Social Networking
As with every blog niche there are social networks that also cater to various interests. Foodies like to discuss food, share their recipes, and mull over culinary ideas. Venture across the Net and join food social networks like BakeSpace, EatNation, and Epicurious’ community in order to gain more readers and find other bloggers to suggest to yours.

Selling
One of the fantastic aspects of owning your own blog is you can monetize it with very little effort. Even if your blog is fairly new you can join food affiliate programs and run their ads on your blog. With affiliate programs, you will earn a percentage of every sale your readers’ make. To start, I recommend joining LinkShare, Amazon, and Commission Junction to join companies that sell everything from cookbooks to kitchen utensils and appliances.

Widgets and Things
Another way to offer your readers an enhanced experience on your blog is to give them widgets to play around with and there are several different ones to choose from. Here are a few I particularly like:

BBC’s GoodFood Widget
Epicurious Widget
Food Network’s Recipe of the Day
Foodie Blog Roll

A Little Inspiration
After researching Web sites and blogs for this article the last Web site I ran across was StartCooking. It’s not only well-done, but for anyone who wants to get a little inspiration from a fellow foodie blogger, look no further than this wonderful blog.
