The Importance of Setting Goals

To succeed in any area of your life, be it business or personal, you must start with a goal. Your ability to set and achieve goals will provide you a sense of direction and is the first step in becoming successful.

People say that you only have to work hard to get where you want to be in life. Well that’s true but you can’t get to where you want to be if you don’t know where you’re going. Does that make sense? You can’t set out to go to a restaurant and not know where it’s located. Just because you know where you want to go doesn’t mean that you can locate it. Sure, you could drive around for hours looking for it but why make it hard on yourself. By doing some preliminary work before you set out on your journey, you could save yourself time, money and energy. For example, you could call in advance to get the address, look online, or even find the address in the yellow pages.

This is what I call laying out your groundwork—it gives you the location of your destination. Setting goals work the same way; it gives you the address of where you want to go so that you can determine the route you need to take in order to get there.

The bottom line is that regardless of your past, if you want success you can have it. It does not matter where you are now or what you have or have not achieved in the past. The only thing that matters is your attitude, your willingness to set goals, and then make a game plan to achieve them.

Your ability to become a professional goal setter will do more to contribute to your success and happiness than any other skill you could ever acquire in life. The truth is that an average person with clearly defined, written goals will run circles around a genius without them. Clear, specific goals are a must for every area of our lives.

Goals enable you to control the direction of your life and they allow the things that are happening around you to be self directed or positive rather than random or negative. Keep in mind that you can’t control what has happened in your past but you can decide whether your future controls you or whether you control it.

By learning to set goals you will become more confident. Working toward goals will raise your self-esteem and self-respect. As you move toward setting then accomplishing your goals, you will have a tremendous feeling of personal pride and accomplishment.
